Relationships – encourage connection and positive working relationships

The relationships we have at work can play an important role in our wellbeing. They provide us with people to share our successes with, ask for help when things feel difficult, and support us through challenges.

We can all face challenges at work sometimes. We may support people in pain or distress, manage challenging behaviours or situations, or simply have a to-do list that feels never ending. While supportive colleagues cannot remove these challenges, they can help us manage them and maintain our wellbeing at work.

Research shows that support from colleagues can help reduce stress, lower the risk of burnout, and increase job satisfaction. On the other hand, poor communication and conflict within teams can have a negative effect on your wellbeing while also leaving you feeling less capable of doing your job.

Supportive relationships can take many forms. They include receiving guidance and feedback, feeling valued and respected, having opportunities to help others, and knowing that support is available when needed. These experiences can help people feel more confident, connected and supported at work.

When we talk about support at work, we mean more than simply having someone to talk to after a difficult event. The evidence highlights the importance of building strong, trusting relationships over time. These connections can provide a valuable source of support when challenges arise.

Importantly, supportive relationships do more than help us recover from stress. They can also help protect our wellbeing before problems develop. Creating a workplace where people know one another, check in regularly, and genuinely care about each other can help build a positive and supportive culture for everyone.
