Growth – create opportunities for learning and development

Growth – create opportunities for learning and development

None of us starts a job knowing everything. We all need opportunities to learn, build our skills and gain experience over time. As well as helping us do our jobs well, learning and development can also support our wellbeing at work.

Opportunities for growth and development can help reduce stress and lower the risk of burnout. Learning new skills, gaining experience and building expertise can increase confidence, strengthen resilience and give us a greater sense of purpose in our work. Having opportunities to develop also helps people stay motivated and engaged. Knowing there are chances to learn, progress and try new things can help us feel positive about our future and more connected to the work we do.

Not only is it important to learn new skills, but also to have opportunities to use them. Being trusted to make decisions, take on responsibilities and apply your knowledge can help people feel valued and confident in their role. These are all related to autonomy, and we know that greater autonomy at work is also linked to a lower risk of burnout.

Growth and development are closely connected to other factors that support wellbeing at work. For example, supportive leaders play an important role by encouraging learning, creating development opportunities and giving staff the trust and support they need to grow. Development also helps people feel more prepared for their role. Building knowledge, skills and confidence can help staff manage current challenges and prepare for future opportunities and responsibilities.

By creating opportunities to learn, develop and use new skills, you can help ensure your workforce is more confident, motivated and better equipped to stay well and thrive at work.
