Maintaining good mental wellbeing at work is much easier to do when we are working within an environment where we feel supported by those around us. If you are in a management or leadership role, there are lots of little things you can do to help your staff feel supported. You can read more about the importance of good management and leadership on the Lifelines Scotland website.
Recognising the signs that someone may be in need of support can be an important first step in providing them with that support. We all react differently to stress and distress, but there are a number of common signs that you can look out for. This webpage from the Samaritans will help you identify some of those.
Leading to Change provide resources aimed at supporting anyone working in health, social care or social work in Scotland to lead with kindness and compassion. They offer a range of leadership development programmes, opportunities and support. You can find more information about what they offer on the Leading to Change website.
Leading to Change have recorded a series of Leadership Stories podcasts featuring interviews with leaders from across Health and Social Care in Scotland. These stories can serve as great inspiration to you on your leadership journey.
We all experience times when life gets on top of us. Sometimes, our work is the main cause of our stress, other times work is made more difficult by stressors we’re experiencing in our personal lives. Either way, it’s important to understand how to manage your own mental health at work, and to feel confident in reaching out to support colleagues who may be in distress. The Mental Health Foundation’s How to support mental health at work document will help you with these.
